They’re businesses in which you pay money to a company for the ability to sell their products.
Sometimes the products are actually kind of decent (I still remember my mom throwing Pampered Chef parties when I was younger).
Other times the products are really poorly made and come with a high price tag.
Typically, the only way to really make money is to get people (mostly friends & family) to sign up with you for a recurring subscription.
If the product is 100% legitimate & valuable, it’s entirely possible to get people to sign-up and continue paying you.
If the product is subpar, you’ll usually burn those bridges kinda quickly and end up with $0 coming in each month.
The biggest issue I’ve seen is that this puts significant stress on your personal relationships, as you’re reliant on selling to your “network.”
Think about it: if you KNEW that every time your friend Sally called, she’d be trying to sell you on one of her products… you’d eventually stop answering Sally’s calls.
Now, this doesn’t mean MLMs are outright bad… it means you need to know what type of MLM you’re getting yourself into before you sign up.
Again, some MLMs provide real value to people, but MOST don’t – and so in this article, I’m going to explore the case with 8 Figure Dream Lifestyle.

Figure Dream Lifestyle LLC / OEA LLC (Online Entrepreneur Academy) Sued By FTC For Telemarketing Fraud
While researching this 8 Figure Dream Lifestyle review, I learned that on June 12, 2019, the FTC filed a lawsuit against 8FDL, its spinoff (Online Entrepreneur Academy), and its owners for telemarketing fraud against consumers.
The lawsuit names John Bain, Alex Dee (also known as Alex S. Dowlatshahi), Brian Kaplan, and Jerrold Maurer as 8fdl officers (aka Jerry Maurer).
All of these officers, as well as 8 Figure Dream Lifestyle LLC, JL Net Bargains, OEA LLC (dba Online Entrepreneur Academy), and Spirit Consulting Group, are named defendants in the FTC’s lawsuit.
The Scott Miller Connection
Further internet research on 8fdl led me to several articles that connected 8 Figure Dream and Tidom.
Tidom, Inc. is owned by Scott Miller. Miller played a significant role in the $1.8 billion Ponzi scheme TelexFree.
Tidom Inc. or Miller are not named as defendants in the FTC’s lawsuit.
FTC Lawsuit Quick Facts
The Federal Trade Commission (“FTC”), in its complaint, alleges:
- Defendants have been marketing and selling illegal money-making opportunities to customers under 8 Figure Dream Lifestyle and Online Entrepreneur Academy since January 2017.
- They have used a variety of robocalls (unlawful telephone calls that are pre-recorded), text messages, live phone calls, ads posts on the internet, social media, emails, and live events.
- Defendants have repeatedly made misleading or unsubstantiated earnings statements in their marketing.
- The defendants who marketed the 8 Figure Dream Lifestyle scheme claimed that average customers with no previous skills or experience would receive $5,000 to $10,000 in 10 to 14 days and $10,000 or more on a consistent basis within 60-90 days of enrolling.
- They’ve marketed 8 Figure Dream Lifestyle as a “franchise-like” opportunity, telling customers that all they have to do to make money is follow Defendants’ “tested business model” or “blueprint for success.”
- These defendants made or caused others to make illegal robocalls to recruit new members to the 8 Figure Dream Lifestyle platform. In reality, most customers who paid $2,395 to $22,495 to join 8 Figure Dream Lifestyle never made a significant income, much less lived an “8 figure” lifestyle. They’ve lost their savings, and many have taken out large loans and raised credit card debt.
- In an early 2018 marketing video for 8 Figure Dream Lifestyle, Defendant Dee boasted that he and Defendants Kaplan and Maurer had earned more than $6.5 million from over 500 customers in less than two years and that the program had paid out “over $25 million in fees” and had over 1,800 customers.
- The defendants in the 8 Figure Dream Lifestyle case have settled with the FTC rather than going to trial to clear their names.
- John A. Bain, Alex Dee (aka Alex S. Dowlatshahi), Brian M. Kaplan, and Jerrold S. Maurer will each accept a $31.9 million judgment under the agreed settlement.
- Violations against consumers cited by FTC:
- Section 5(a) of the FTC Act, 15 U.S.C. § 45(a), prohibits ”unfair or deceptive acts or practices in or affecting commerce.”
- Misrepresentations or deceptive omissions of material fact constitute deceptive acts or practices prohibited by Section 5(a) of the FTC Act.
Can I Make Money In A Network Marketing Company?
You know, it’s really a shame that shady companies like TeleFree and 8 Figure Dream Lifestyle make a bad name for the network marketing industry and make people avoid this potentially decent earning opportunity provided by legitimate companies.

Is 8 Figure Dream Lifestyle A Pyramid Scheme?
It’s now very clear that the company is a scam utilizing MLM as a cover to hide its pyramid scheme.
Now that you know more, it’s easier to say they were a pyramid scheme. Thanks to the FTC, it’s become easier to identify if they’re a pyramid scheme.
Despite some similarities to a pyramid scheme, is it still possible to make money with an MLM?
You can certainly make money with MLM, but if you’re gonna put in the amount of grueling work to become a network marketing associate (which, trust me, isn’t easy), you might as well bring in some REAL money.

The Red Flags
Let’s take a look at the red flags that were there already back then…
Back in the day, when they still had a website running, you’d think their website would sell their products right on the landing page, but they didn’t.
It’ll be hard for you to nail down information on any of the products or services they offer for sale, and the only thing you can buy is an affiliate membership.
In the WordPress website that I was able to dig up, 8fdl claimed to be a multi-level marketing program and the #1 online business for professionals, entrepreneurs, business owners, and retirees.
What Products Did 8 Figure Dream Lifestyle Sell?
There were no physical or digital products sold or rented. Their affiliates were only allowed to promote the 8fdl affiliate membership.
Recruiting and convincing people to join would be your only source of money if you join.
Since there was no actual product, a member’s only source of income was from promoting the 8fdl affiliate membership.
This was a major warning sign that it was a pyramid scheme.
How To Get Started With 8 Figure Dream Lifestyle?
In order to join the business platform of 8fdl, there were 5 packages that you could choose to pay to be a member:
Basic Package
Costs $2,000 plus $195 in licensing fee.
Includes a meditation series, internet marketing skills modules, flyers, the law of attraction, and self-esteem tips, among other things.
Fee Builder Package
Costs $3,500 plus $295 in licensing fee.
Includes fitness-related training material, weight-loss tips, motivational materials, and more.
Advanced Package
It costs $6,500 plus a $395 licensing fee.
Includes 25 training videos on how to get people to visit your sales page.
Pro Package
Costs $12,500 plus $445 in licensing fee.
Includes instruction on how to use YouTube for traffic, email marketing, list building, webinar hosting, and other topics.
VIP Package
Costs $22,000 plus $495 in licensing fee.
Blueprints for webinars, podcasts, video sales, email copy, and social media are included.
Even at Tier 1, the packages are incredibly expensive and don’t provide good value for money.
If you look closely at what these programs have to offer, however, you can find information for free ONLINE if you know where to look.
After joining the program, a member will be sold more tools than they say you would need to run the business. These tools are not for free.
- Phone Dialer System – Pay per need, on average $500 per week (depending on how many leads you want to work with)
- Texting System – Pay per need, on average, $50 per month.
- Email (Aweber) – $19/month
- Website/Funnel – $95/month
- Virtual Assistant – $250/month
The 8 Figure Dream Lifestyle Compensation Plan
As previously stated, the only product you could purchase on the brand’s platform was the earning opportunity.
The company will introduce you to a uni-level compensation system that allows you to receive cash gifts when you sign up as an affiliate.
This cash was distributed among members on a 1-up system, and there were five different tiers to choose from:
- Tier 1 — $2000
- Tier 2 — $3500
- Tier 3 — $6500
- Tier 4 — $12,500
- Tier 5 — $22,000
The first commission you earn from their cash gifting activities is now passed on to the person who recruited you.
The following commissions will then be assigned to you.
If you want to keep all of the commissions you earn, you’ll need to upgrade to Tier 5, which costs $22,000 and allows you to keep all of your earnings instead of passing them on to other members.
It’s also worth noting that you can only earn through the purchased tiers.
Tier 1 is the only tier you can earn if you pay $2,000 for it. As a result, if your recruit purchases a Tier 2, you will not be able to earn their commission.
To receive the commission, you must purchase Tier 2.
Are There Alternatives To 8 Figure Dream Lifestyle?
Yes, there are plenty of MLM companies to choose from if you want to pursue this business model. Here are just a few:
Is 8 Figure Dream Lifestyle A Scam?
So, time for the $1,000,000 question: is this Internet Network Marketing Business a scam?
No, not technically. They aren’t going to run off with your money and not give you what you paid for. It’s 100% possible to make money with this program.
That being said, it’s not nearly as simple as they want you to think it is.
There’s A LOT of work to be done upfront and no guarantee that you’ll be successful. The commissions are also fairly small.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for doing hard work now, so that I can reap the benefits later.
But if you’re going to work really hard for 3 months, and your reward is a $100 check… it’s not really a great opportunity.
If I’m gonna do that, I want the rewards to be HIGH and virtually guaranteed.
I’d rather put in that same 3 months of work (in my spare time) & build a handful of Digital Rental Properties that each produce $500-$2,000 checks every single month afterward (AKA recurring income).
