MLM Companies like Avon are a bit of a mixed bag. They CAN be a legitimate way to make money, but some have a reputation for literally ruining people’s lives – so it’s important to know what you’re getting, since each one is unique.

And it makes sense why so many people recommend them:

Before that, I want to clear the air on something.
There are A LOT of people out there who bash all MLMs in any form. However, I’m not one of those people.
Instead, I want to genuinely educate you about them so you can make an informed decision on how to proceed.
If you’re unfamiliar with what MLMs actually do:
They’re businesses in which you pay money to a company for the ability to sell their products.
Sometimes the products are actually kind of decent (I still remember my mom throwing pampered-chef parties when I was younger).
Other times the products are really poorly made and come with a high price tag.
Typically, the only way to really make money is to get people (mostly friends & family) to sign up with you for a recurring subscription.
If the product is 100% legitimate & valuable, it’s entirely possible to get people to sign-up and continue paying you.
If the product is subpar, you’ll usually burn those bridges kinda quickly and end up with $0 coming in each month.
The biggest issue I’ve seen is that this puts significant stress on your personal relationships, as you’re reliant on selling to your “network.”
Think about it: if you KNEW that every time your friend Sally called, she’d be trying to sell you on one of her products… you’d eventually stop answering Sally’s calls.
Now, this doesn’t mean MLMs are outright bad… it means you need to know what type of MLM you’re getting yourself into before you sign up.
Again, some MLMs provide real value to people, but MOST don’t – so in this article, I’m going to explore the case with Avon.

Avon’s History
Avon’s founder, David McConnell, initially had no desire to start a cosmetics business.
His previous job was as a traveling book salesman who gave out free perfume samples as a bonus to his sales pitches.
He soon realized that customers were more drawn to the free perfume samples than the books.
So after his “aha” moment, McConnell returned to his New York City office and began experimenting with various fragrance blends to create a signature product.
September 1886:
Then, he gathers a group of passionate female sales representatives to assist him in starting his new perfume business.
He started his new business in a small office at 126 Chambers Street in Manhattan, New York.
This was a revolutionary business strategy in 1886, but McConnell was dedicated to empowering women economically and believed in the power of community.
1892
McConnell changed the company’s name in 1892.
His business partner suggested the name “California Perfume Company.”
He proposed the name because of California’s abundance of flowers.
May 1894:
Alexander D. Henderson joined the company as vice-president and treasurer, helping to form its policies and contribute to its growth.
1897:
The company built a laboratory in Suffern, New York.
May 3, 1909:
The California Perfume Company moved its corporate office to 31 Park Place in New York.
June 16, 1909:
McConnell and Henderson signed a certificate of incorporation for the California Perfume Company in New Jersey.
January 28, 1916:
The California Perfume Company was incorporated in the state of New York. Company officials were listed as McConnell, Henderson, and William Scheele.

Meanwhile, the global company Avon Products relocated its headquarters to London, United Kingdom, as part of a three-year plan.
March 2016:
For $435 million in cash, Cerberus Capital Management purchased Avon Products’ preferred shares, completing the sale of 80.1% of Avon’s North American division to Cerberus in December 2015.
The total contract value was $605 million. Due to the investment, Cerberus currently owns nearly 17% of Avon Products.
August 2019:
Avon LLC, a privately-held North American company that split from Avon Products, Inc. has reached a deal with LG Household & Health Care, Ltd., which will buy the cosmetics company for $125 million in cash.
January 2020:
Avon Products, Inc. was purchased by Natura &Co.
Natura, Aesop, and The Body Shop are all part of the Natura &Co chain, which has grown to become the world’s fourth-largest pure-play cosmetics firm with the purchase of Avon.
September 2020:
The company launched a new ad campaign entitled “Watch Me Now” with new brand visuals and a new Avon logo.
Is Avon A Good Product?
Avon competes in the cosmetics sector with companies like L’Oreal and Estée Lauder in terms of quality and brand.
Since Avon was founded more than 130 years ago, ladies have continued to buy their products. That deserves a lot of credit.
Additionally, the business brags about having a Research and development center in New York.
They have a team of scientists and researchers on staff who assist with developing new beauty products.

You can certainly make money with Avon MLM, but if you’re gonna put in the amount of grueling work to become a network marketer (which, trust me, isn’t easy), you might as well bring in some REAL money.

Is Avon Safe To Use?
Avon claims that in the more than 50 countries where they conduct business, they are dedicated to offering safe and effective products and take great pride in their 135-year safety record.
They assert that their products adhere to the same global standards of quality and safety and that all laws governing cosmetics and personal care products are strictly followed.
Is Avon A Multi-Level Marketing Company?
The fact that Avon engages in multilevel marketing is not widely known.
This is likely because Avon only switched to an MLM business model in 2005.
Contrary to what many people think, Avon is an MLM opportunity.

Is Avon Cosmetics A Pyramid Scheme?
Avon is not a pyramid scheme. It has a track record that can be trusted and offers high-quality products.
Avon has long been and continues to be the backbone of the direct sale market industry’s credibility.
It has unwittingly given credibility to multi-level marketing (MLM) schemes that marketed outrageous health scams, some of which have been prosecuted by financially ruined customers and some of which regulators have shut down for pyramid scheme fraud.
Blatant schemes persuade customers that they’re legal MLMs through their affiliation with Avon as “direct selling” companies.
Anyone who has ever challenged the legitimacy of a multi-level marketing company has been confronted with the defiant question, “Are you claiming Avon is also fraudulent?”
As a member of the Direct Selling Association, Avon is the ambassador for the MLM market industry.
Avon Cosmetics has been a legal company operating for many years.
Their excellent track record of quality products and training support for sales representatives clearly prove that they are not a pyramid scheme.
It’s entirely possible to build a profitable, successful MLM business.

Despite the fact that Avon has several problems, including overcharging customers and employing misleading practices, they are not considered a pyramid scheme because they do not emphasize recruitment over actual sales.

What Companies Are Pyramid Schemes?

BurnLounge:
This is one of the few MLMs that has been shut down as a part of the Federal Trade Commission’s investigation and lawsuit.
BurnLounge was an online music shop that began as an MLM company in 2004.
Customers could buy a membership and resell subscriptions and songs on their websites.
This style was dubbed “concentric shopping” by BurnLounge.
BurnLounge is a pyramid scam, according to the FTC, because it pays these consumers more for selling subscriptions than for selling songs.
FTC says it’s a pyramid scheme since recruits pay more than the actual product.
BurnLounge was sued by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in 2007.
In 2012, BurnLounge lost the lawsuit, and in 2014, it lost an appeal.
Equinox:
Equinox was founded in 1991 as an MLM company by Bill Gouldd and first came under scrutiny in 1996.
Investors filed civil and criminal lawsuits against Equinox, alleging that they were defrauded.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced in 2000 that Equinox had reached an out-of-court settlement with the FTC, promising to pay $40 million in restitution.
Equinox was disbanded in 2001, and Gouldd was barred from participating in MLMs in the USA.
Fortune Hi-Tech Marketing:
Thomas Mills and Paul Orberson founded Hi-Tech Marketing as an MLM in Lexington, Kentucky, in 2001.
Haircare products, mobile phones, and satellite television services were among the items and services offered.
A sales rep paid a paltry amount (.25 percent to 1 percent) on products sold.
The state of Montana charged Fortune Hi-Tech, and the company paid a $1 million settlement to avoid going to court.
The FTC, as well as the states of Kentucky, Illinois, and North Carolina, then sued Fortune Hi-Tech.
According to the FTC, the MLM company and its members made the most of their money from recruiting rather than sales orders of products and services, rendering it a pyramid scheme.
Fortune Hi-Tech Marketing’s office in Kentucky was raided in 2013, and the company was put into receivership, effectively closing it down.
Fortune Hi-Tech and the state of Kentucky settled in court in 2014.

If you really want to come out of the gate swinging, you should go for a higher-priced starter kit ($50 and $100).
Depending on sales numbers, Avon’s commission percentage can reach 50%.
When you hit the company’s “President’s Club” rank, you will receive up to 50% sales commission.
In the multi-level marketing world, this is very generous.
Affordable Products
This is also a strong selling point since most people consider price to be the most critical factor in purchasing decisions.
People are hesitant to part with their hard-earned money, but offering inexpensive, high-quality products would make it easier for you to sell them.
Cons:
There are controversies surrounding Avon, such as bribery and PETA allegations. There are also reports of continued declining sales over recent years.

Yes, there are plenty of other business models to choose from if you want to pursue making money in 2022. Here are just a few:
Is Avon A Scam?
So, time for the $1,000,000 question: is Avon a scam?
No, not technically. They aren’t going to run off with your money and not give you what you paid for. It’s 100% possible to make money with this program.
That being said, it’s not nearly as simple as they want you to think it is.
There’s A LOT of work to be done upfront, and there’s no guarantee that you’ll succeed. The commissions are also fairly small.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for doing hard work now, so that I can reap the benefits later.
But if you’re going to work really hard for 3 months, and your reward is a $100 check… it’s not really a great opportunity.
If I’m gonna do that, I want the rewards to be HIGH and virtually guaranteed.
I’d rather put in that same 3 months of work (in my spare time) & build a handful of Digital Rental Properties that each produce $500-$2,000 checks every single month afterward (AKA recurring income).
And the cool part is that you can do it in a lot less time than 3-months (I personally did it in my first 2 weeks of using the Digital Rental Method).
