If you’ve watched The Wolf of Wall Street, you must know Jordan Belfort, who Leonardo DiCaprio played. He has his own training program called the Straight Line Persuasion System, which I will review here.
Now, I want to be totally up front here, so…
Jordan Belfort’s Sales Training is a training program that claims to turn you into a 6-figure earner by becoming a “high-ticket closer.”
To put it simply, they teach you to do sales for online courses.
To clear the air here, you can in fact make 6-figures by doing high ticket sales.
The caveat? You’re essentially trading one job for another.
Competent salespeople will always be a need. And if you’re partnered with a good product to sell, you can earn some good income and work from pretty much anywhere you want.
The major downside here is that this all relies on things going 100% according to plan, i.e. people actually showing up to the phone calls that get booked for you, and having the motivation (and financial qualification), to actually buy from you.
And unless you’re working with the cream-of-the-crop course sellers that REALLY know how to do their marketing and follow-up, this is most likely not going to be the case.
So therein lies my biggest issue with being a “closer”: no matter how much money you may make in one month, you’re entirely at the mercy of another person’s whims in the next month (AKA your income can always be taken away from you).
The second biggest issue is lead quality. For most online programs, you’re looking at a 60% no-show rate (meaning people don’t attend the scheduled call).
So if you set aside 8 hours for calls, you’ll maybe get to talk to 3-4 people at best. If you factor in only half of the people being financially qualified, you have maybe 2 people that could afford to buy from you (you then, of course, have to actually close them).
Keep in mind, that’s a best-case scenario.
Issue #3: commission rate. Most programs claim you’ll make $1,000+ per day in commissions.
The average commission for a coaching program is going to be around $500. That means you need to close 2 calls every single day to hit that number.
But if you’re only getting on calls with 2 people who could afford to buy from you, you’ll need to have a 50-100% close rate. And to be frank, if you could do that… you should be selling your own stuff, not someone else’s.
The last issue is going to be consistency. Sales moves in cycles. You’ll have high highs, and very low lows. If you can deal with that emotional rollercoaster, then this one isn’t necessarily an issue for you.

Jordan’s first business was selling meat and fish. When it failed, he became a stockbroker before being imprisoned. As shown in the film, he was incredibly convincing when calling people to invest in worthless IPOS, penny stocks, and many other unethical and illegal items.

Jordan now turned his life around by teaching people globally his sales process techniques and using these techniques ethically and legally. He is now selling himself as a motivational speaker and selling several marketing and sales courses.

According to Belfort, being in charge of your interactions with the client is the key to selling. As a result, he named it Straight Line Persuasion. The strategy directs the potential customer right to the sale.
The three tenets of the Straight Line Persuasion System identified here are to:
- Build rapport with your client at the fastest possible time.
- Gather intelligence – get as much information from your prospect as possible, like if he is a target client and has money to buy it.

And to create a sales map smoothly, you need excellent product knowledge, which can be shown with the right tonality and body language. You need to be:

Module 2: The Art And Science Of Prospecting
The course’s second module gives a detailed discussion of how to attract potential customers. Again, you’ll be able to gather knowledge by using the skills you’ll master in Module 1 as you ask the right questions.

Module 7: The Art And Science Of Qualifying
You will learn in this Straight Line Persuasion module how to identify your prospective buyers from non-buyers.
When asking questions, you will learn to ask permission first, especially because you are going to ask about financial matters. Because this is a very sensitive matter, use a non-threatening, empathetic, and matter-of-fact tone.
Listen carefully to what your prospective client is saying and ask questions to clarify further before delivering your sales pitch.

- Please don’t misconstrue my enthusiasm for pressure– This is good to use when you’re pushing for the close but don’t want your client to let his guard up.
Module 10: Becoming A Person Of Influence
In the last module of the Straight Line Persuasion course, you will learn to respect whatever decision your client makes, especially if he will not buy because he cannot afford your product or the product is not suitable for him.
If your prospect gives you feedback that he doesn’t like your product, but you think otherwise, persuade him using logic. However, if the client’s reason for saying no is emotional, share interesting information about your company that will make him trust your product.
And more importantly, Jordan emphasizes the importance of establishing relationships with prospective clients based on honesty and trust.

My Final Verdict
The Straight Line Persuasion System of Jordan Belfort is not really new. Others claim that it’s not originally his and is already outdated.
Wouldn’t you rather pay for a current training program constantly adapting to the volatile market? Besides, who still calls people over the phone to make a sale?
Belfort remains to be a controversial celebrity. To date, he has only paid $10M out of the $110M he was ordered by the court to pay his clients that he had scammed almost 2 decades ago!
Even if the current rates of Straight Line Persuasion system courses are now lower than before, I don’t recommend his program. The advantages of honing your sales skills do not outweigh the disadvantages.
Unless, of course, you have money to burn and time to spare…

Time for the $1,000,000 question: is The Straight Line System a scam?
No, it’s not a “scam,” technically speaking. You can 100% make money with it, and if you’re already stuck trading your time for money in some 9-5, it’s not a bad gig.
The thing to keep in mind is that you are NOT creating a lasting business. You’re changing jobs. You’re not going to have the luxury of sippin’ coconuts on the beach, because you will always be trading your time for money.
That doesn’t mean The Straight Line System is bad. You just need to be realistic with what you’re buying.
If half of your day is spent twiddling your thumbs because your scheduled call didn’t pick up, you could easily have spent that time building a reliable recurring income stream.
Wouldn’t you rather spend a few hours of your free time each day to generate a $500-$2,000 check that would continue to come in month after month?
